CORBETT AND COURTNEY BEFORE THE KINETOGRAPH (1894)

🇬🇧 This is a historical film produced by the Edison Manufacturing Company and directed by William K.L. Dickson and William Heise. This 35-second short features a boxing match between James J. Corbett, a world champion, and Peter Courtney. 

Filmed at the Black Maria Studio, considered to be the first film studio in the USA. Although only a fragment of the film survives today, it was a commercial success at the time, especially as boxing was banned in some states. It soon aroused everyone's curiosity.

The fight is shown in six rounds of about one minute each, and it is interesting to observe the boxing techniques of the time, which were very different from those of today. I'm glad we have this visual record to compare the present with the past.

🇵🇹 Este é um filme histórico produzido pela Edison Manufacturing Company e realizado por William K.L. Dickson e William Heise. Nesta curta de 35 segundos é apresentada uma luta de boxe entre James J. Corbett, um campeão mundial, e Peter Courtney.

Filmado no estúdio Black Maria, considerado o primeiro estúdio de cinema dos EUA. Apesar de apenas um fragmento do filme sobreviver até hoje, ele foi um sucesso comercial na época, especialmente porque o boxe estava proibido em alguns estados. Logo suscitava á curiosidade de todos.

A luta é mostrada em seis rounds, cada um com aproximadamente um minuto de duração, e é interessante observar as técnicas de boxe da época, bem diferentes das atuais. Ainda bem que temos este registo visual para a comparação entre os tempos atuais e o passado.
